The Stress and Adaptation in Family Caregiver of Chemotherapy Patients

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the stress and adaptation in family caregiver of chemotherapy patients.
The study subjects consisted of 125 family caregiver of chemotherapy patients who were hospitalized at two university hospitals.
The researcher and research assistant visited the family caregiver of chemotherapy patients and explained the purpose and procedures of the study and then collected the data after the questionnaire was answered by the family caregivers.
Using the SPSS statistical program, frequency, mean, factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation analysis were used for data analysis.
The result are as follows :
1. The mean score for the stress of family caregiver was 2.28(maximum score : 4) and there were no significant differences according to demographic variables.
2. The mean score for the family resource was 2.90(maximum score : 4) and the family resource was classified into 4 factors : love and cooperation ; active resource finding ; economic resource ; and out-family support.
3. The mean score for the perception of family caregiver to stress was 3.11(maximum score : 4) and the perception of family caregiver was classified into 3 factors : hope ; consolable thinking ; and transcendence.
4. The mean score for the adaptation of family caregiver was 2.01(maximum score : 4).
5. The correlation between family stress and family resource, between family stress and family perception between family stress and adaptation was negative. The correlation between family resource and family perception, between resource and adaptation, between family perception and adaptation was positive.
The study revealed that adaptation of family caregiver was correlated with family resource and family perception. Consequently, the implication for nursing is that is a need to develop a supportive intervention for family caregiver in order to promote family resource and to change family perception.
